I also found Clubhouse interesting except for the fact that once again you need to be fluent in English either to express yourself or to perfectly understand the speakers (and most of the time the quality of the mic is really bad). More than 90% of the rooms are in English.

I wonder when the translation feature will be available to really open the conversation worldwide on those types of social media.

Besides, I also wonder how people will react when they will read very soon that Clubhouse is using their voice to train AI.

Last, here is a very good article from The Verge about moderation: https://www.theverge.com/22273071/podcast-moderation-apple-spotify-podbean-steve-bannon, that is going to be relevant for Clubhouse as well. For instance, you can already listen to anti-vaccine groups that are very harmful without anyone to moderate what is said in the room, because the moderator won't let you go to the stage.

Hi Elisa, thank you for your comment and the article you shared!

I hope we made it clear in our this issue that we don't back Clubhouse or recommend it as a platform. Instead, we are curious about audio-based social media, and Clubhouse is the most prominent example lately. There are several other options to try out, such as DogeHouse (which is open source). And as we mentioned, Twitter is seemingly also launching Spaces, a feature similar to Clubhouse.

The language issue you mention is interesting, as I found that Clubhouse has much more language variation than most other social media platforms that I use right now - I get recommended both rooms in English and other languages I speak and then others that I don't speak.

All the best!

Hi Larissa, You're the lucky one to speak many languages and perfect English! I noticed since one week that Clubhouse is pushing the subscription in France a lot (giving me possibilities to invite people even though I don't listen very much to the different rooms). Regarding Spaces, at the moment it is only for IoS as well, so not very open, but it is still in its beta version. I do agree with you on the fact that something is happening but I'm surprised not to read more cautious articles on how to use it. All the best as well (especially for the weeks to come!)

Hi Elisa,

I agree with you that we have to consider the issues around social media platforms in general and specifically with regards to Clubhouse. I really hope that people consider the articles we shared in the appendix of this issue, as I really think people should be cautious in regards to data privacy when using social media.

At the same time, I feel that although we as users should be careful when using and subscribing to such platforms, there is also a limitation of how much we should expect from individuals in regards to collecting knowledge about data protection. We as a society should decide that legal regulations are needed in the digital realm to protect those citizens who do not have the resources to inform themselves about all the layers of data protection - and we should ask for more resources in schools to teach children about data literacy.

The user should not be the only one taking the responsibility of handling data privacy - the companies designing the platforms should just as much be responsible to be as transparent and accessible as possible and needed. And data literacy on the citizen level is crucially needed in order to increase the pressure on our legislators to push for stricter rules within data privacy.

As you read French have a look at what a Swiss Museum is doing to help students understand the question of Big data. Post it last week on my Twitter : www.mfk.ch/fr/bigdata/
